DarkRP Rules
TSO DarkRP Rules
2.1 – Random Death Match (RDM)
Random death match (RDM) is the act of killing or attempting to kill (ARDM) another player without a legitimate roleplay reason.
You may only kill another player when you have a valid reason directly connected to an active roleplay situation, such as:
- Defending yourself from an attacker
- Defending your property
- Participating in a legitimate raid
- Participating in an active mugging or kidnapping
- Defending a faction or territory where permitted by these rules
OOC disagreements, insults, personal dislike, suspicion, or someone simply being armed are not valid reasons to kill another player.
Self-defence may only be used when you have been damaged or are under an immediate and credible threat. Someone shooting at you without hitting you does not automatically justify lethal force.
You may not deliberately create or provoke a situation solely to obtain a reason to kill another player.
2.2 – New Life Rule (NLR)
After dying, you must forget the events surrounding your death and may not use information obtained before your death to influence your new life.
You may not:
- Return to the area of your death to seek revenge
- Kill someone because they killed you in your previous life
- Continue an RP situation that you were involved in before dying
- Communicate information obtained before your death to other players
- Return to your base while an active raid is taking place
You must not interact with players or entities near your place of death for 3 minutes. You may pass through the area without interacting with the RP taking place there.
Exceptions to NLR are defined elsewhere in these rules.
2.3 – Realism & FearRP
You must act appropriately for your job and the roleplay situation around you.
You must value your character’s life when faced with a credible threat. If a weapon is being directly pointed at you and you have no reasonable means of escape or defence, you are expected to comply with the situation rather than deliberately ignoring the threat.
Examples of unrealistic behaviour include:
- Citizens enforcing government law
- Police officers participating in criminal activity
- Government officials purchasing or using illegal entities
- Ignoring an active kidnapping or mugging
- Deliberately putting yourself in a situation where you would reasonably expect to be killed
- Committing suicide to escape an RP situation
You may not deliberately ignore the consequences of an active roleplay situation.
2.4 – FailRP
FailRP is behaviour that intentionally ignores the roleplay situation, your job, or the circumstances surrounding you.
You must act in a manner reasonably consistent with your current role and the situation taking place around you.
Examples include:
- Government jobs acting as criminals
- Criminals openly ignoring active police presence without reasonable justification
- Using a job for purposes unrelated to its intended role
- Ignoring an active hostage situation
- Using unrealistic behaviour to gain an advantage during RP
- Deliberately breaking character to disrupt another player’s roleplay
2.5 – Metagaming
You may not use information obtained outside of roleplay to influence your character’s actions.
This includes information obtained through:
- OOC chat
- Discord or other external communication
- Spectating
- Death screens
- Streams or recordings
- Staff messages
- Other players communicating information outside of RP
Your character must only act on information they could reasonably obtain within the roleplay environment.
2.6 – Props
The use of props to gain an unfair advantage in any way is prohibited.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Prop climbing
- Prop blocking
- Prop killing
- Prop pushing
- Prop surfing
- Prop trapping
- Using props to gain an unfair combat advantage
- Using props to obstruct another player’s roleplay
Under no circumstances are the following to be blocked off:
- NPCs
- Job entities
- City Worker Tasks
- Oil Refiner oil spots
- Other entities required for normal gameplay
2.7 – Demotions
Demotions, using the /demote command, are only to be carried out for legitimate roleplay reasons.
OOC reasons are not legitimate grounds for a demotion.
For example, a police officer basing and refusing to enforce the law is a valid reason for demotion. Disliking a player is not a valid reason and is considered FailRP.
2.8 – Laws & The Mayor
The Mayor may create laws within reason.
Laws must:
- Be reasonably enforceable
- Apply fairly to players
- Not intentionally create loopholes for RDA or RDM
- Not contradict server rules
- Not be created solely to target an individual player
Unrealistic laws are considered FailRP.
For example, laws surrounding minor actions such as jaywalking are prohibited.
Laws may not encourage KOS as a first resort. Arrest on sight (AOS) should be the first resort where practical.
If a law-breaking individual is non-violently resisting arrest, officers should use the taser where practical.
Lethal force should only be used when the individual is violently resisting arrest or presents an immediate threat to the officer or others.
2.9 – Police Department
The lobby of the Police Department is considered public property and may not be locked unless reasonably required by an active RP situation, such as a Police Department raid.
A citizen beyond the lobby may be given 3 fair warnings to leave.
Warnings must have reasonable time between them for the player to comply.
If the player refuses to leave after the warnings, arrest on sight (AOS) is permitted.
2.10 – Random Arrest (RDA)
Police may only arrest players when there is a legitimate roleplay reason to do so.
Valid reasons include:
- Breaking an active law
- Being directly observed committing a crime
- Having legitimate RP evidence of criminal activity
- Being wanted for a valid roleplay reason
You may not arrest someone because of:
- OOC information
- Personal dislike
- Suspicion without reasonable grounds
- Someone else’s unsupported accusation
- Their job alone
- Their appearance or equipment alone
Police may not repeatedly arrest a player without a legitimate reason.
2.11 – Police Force
Police must use reasonable force appropriate to the situation.
The taser should be used where practical when dealing with non-violent suspects.
Lethal force is only permitted when the player presents an immediate and credible threat to the officer or another person.
Running away from an officer does not automatically justify lethal force.
Police may not use their weapons to enforce minor laws where less-lethal alternatives are reasonably available.
2.12 – Scamming
Scamming is defined as intentionally failing to fulfil an agreed exchange after another player has provided their goods, money, or service.
Examples include:
- Buying guns without paying the agreed amount
- Taking payment without providing the agreed service
- Intentionally misleading another player during a transaction
Scamming is not allowed.
We encourage the use of recording software during deals outside of the !unbox system to ensure fairness.
2.13 – Stealing
When stealing an entity from another player, you must:
- Be playing a criminal job
- Have previously seen the entity or product you intend to steal
- Advertise the theft using the
/advertcommand
If the player you are stealing from does not possess the entity or product you advertised, the attempted theft is considered RDM.
2.14 – Alternate RP Situations
Players may not use one RP situation as an excuse to interfere with an unrelated RP situation.
For example, participating in a raid does not automatically give you permission to attack unrelated players nearby.
You must have a legitimate roleplay reason to interact with or harm another player.
Properties & Building
2.15 – Building & KOS Signs
Building signs indicate that a property is not currently available for normal roleplay interactions.
Building signs may only be placed in front of property which you own.
A building sign prevents the use of money-making entities such as:
- Money printers
- Weed plants
- Meth labs
- Other entities intended to generate money
KOS signs warn players that lethal action may be taken if they violate the stated conditions.
KOS signs may only be placed in front of property which you own.
KOS is permitted if someone is clearly raiding your base, even without a KOS sign. For example, someone picklocking a door to enter your base may be considered a raid.
The only reasons permitted on a KOS sign are:
- Inside your building
- On your property
- Shooting at the inside of your property
- Trying to kill you
- Harassing you or other players inside your property
“Being annoying” is not a valid KOS reason and is considered RDM.
Signs specifying “KOS all valid reasons” are permitted and include the valid reasons listed above.
All KOS and building signs must:
- Be visible to players outside your property
- Use a reasonable font size
- Be clearly understandable
- Have lettering at least size 50
2.16 – Keypad Fading Doors
You may have a maximum of 4 fading doors controlled by keypads which a raider must crack to enter the base.
Stacking fading doors is not permitted.
A raider must be able to access all items of value by cracking keypads no more than 4 times in total.
This includes items such as:
- Printers
- Weed plants
- Meth labs
- Other valuable entities
Each keypad may control a maximum of 1 fading door.
Each fading door may be controlled by a maximum of 2 keypads.
Keypads may not be hidden in order to hinder raiders or prevent access.
Shooting windows may not be controlled by keypads and must instead be controlled by buttons.
All keypads must have a reasonable delay between opening and closing the fading door.
You may not open or close fading doors during a raid in order to hinder a raider.
The space between fading doors must be large enough to fit at least 2 players in all directions, excluding up/down.
2.17 – Button Fading Doors
Fading doors may not be controlled by buttons which a raider must use to collect or destroy all items of value or kill the defender.
Buttons may only be used to open and close fading doors.
Toggle must be enabled.
2.18 – Shooting Windows
Shooting windows and positions are permitted unless they provide an unfair advantage.
World-glow is permitted for viewing the raider but may not be used as a one-way shooting position.
During gunfire, both parties must have a reasonably similar amount of visibility to one another.
Unfair angles which allow the defender to see the raider while remaining completely hidden are prohibited.
Shooting windows and holes must be at least the size of a 5x5x5 cube.
2.19 – Accessibility
Players must be able to access a property on foot without requiring specific actions such as crouching or jumping.
This applies to bases using:
- World doors
- Sewer pipes
- Windows
- Ledges
- Roofs
- Other map features
If necessary, owners must build reasonable ramps or catwalks to provide access without disturbing other players.
Bases that are intentionally disorientating, difficult to navigate, or contain unnecessary turns, dead ends, or other features designed to excessively extend access are prohibited.
Cameras must be accessible to raiders and able to be destroyed during the raid.
2.20 – Blocking Areas of the Map
You may not block off large areas of the map without providing a reasonable passage usable by everyone.
This includes areas such as:
- Tunnels
- Industrial areas
- Residential areas
- Major roads
- Other public areas
Basing inside tunnels is allowed but must contain a passage at least 2 players high and 4 players wide.
The required passage is not considered part of your property.
2.21 – Checkpoints
Government checkpoints are buildings or structures used to temporarily stop players and search them for illegal weapons or items.
Checkpoints are permitted provided that they:
- Are quick to pass through
- Are manned at all times
- Take less than 30 seconds to pass unless the player is carrying an illegal item
If a checkpoint is not manned, it must remain open.
Charging players to pass through a checkpoint is prohibited.
2.22 – Bank
Only the Banker and personnel hired by the Banker may build inside the bank.
Neither the Banker nor personnel hired by them may participate in an inside job of the bank.
The Banker may legally store printers belonging to other players inside the bank and may charge a fee for this service.
Government personnel may not raid the bank solely because printers are being stored there.
2.23 – Traps
Traps are prohibited.
This includes:
- Fading floors
- Drop traps
- Invisible traps
- Steep slopes designed to trap players
- Other mechanisms designed to prevent players from safely leaving
Players must be able to exit the same way they entered.
2.24 – Street Vendors
Street vendors, such as Gun Dealers, may establish their shop on the side of the road.
Street vendors must not block roads, entrances, pathways, or otherwise significantly disturb other players or their roleplay.
Roleplay
2.25 – Adverts
You must advertise when:
- Raiding
- Assisting
- Countering
- Mugging
- Stealing
- Kidnapping
- Warning others
Advertisements must be sent using the /advert command.
The advertisement must clearly describe the action you are about to perform.
Advertisements may not combine multiple unrelated actions.
When an applicable RP event has ended, you must advertise its conclusion.
For example:
/advert raid over
Advertisements must be clear and understandable.
2.26 – Warnings
You may only issue warnings for legitimate roleplay reasons.
Examples include:
- Someone following you
- Someone refusing to leave your property
- Someone violating a legitimate KOS condition
You must give 3 warnings with at least 5 seconds between each warning.
After the third warning, lethal action may be permitted where applicable.
Warnings may not be used as an excuse to manufacture a reason for RDM.
2.27 – RP Evading & Combat Logging
You may not leave the server, disconnect, respawn, change jobs, or otherwise manipulate the game to escape an active RP situation.
This includes:
- Disconnecting during a raid
- Disconnecting during a mugging
- Disconnecting during a kidnapping
- Running to spawn to escape an RP situation
- Committing suicide to escape an RP situation
- Changing jobs to avoid an RP situation
- Reconnecting to reset an active situation
You must remain involved in an active RP situation until it has reasonably concluded.
2.28 – Job Switching
You may not change jobs during an active RP situation to gain an advantage or escape its consequences.
This includes changing jobs to:
- Escape a raid
- Escape a mugging
- Escape a kidnapping
- Avoid police
- Counter an event without a legitimate reason
- Remove yourself from an active RP situation
Job changes must be appropriate to the roleplay taking place.
During a raid, job changes are prohibited until the raid has ended.
2.29 – Raiding
You must wait at least 15 minutes before raiding the same player again.
You must wait at least 5 minutes before raiding a different player.
A raid may last a maximum of 10 minutes.
A raid must be advertised before entering the property.
You may only destroy cameras after the raid has been advertised.
A raid begins once the required advertisement has been made and the raider begins actively attempting to enter the property.
You may not change jobs during an active raid.
You may only attack players directly involved in the raid or players who are legitimately defending the property.
2.30 – Counter-Raiding
Countering an active criminal event does not give you permission to RDM unrelated players.
Only criminal jobs and law enforcement may counter criminal RP events unless otherwise permitted by these rules.
Citizens may only counter events which directly affect or include members of their faction or players they are basing with.
Players countering an event may only engage those directly participating in the event.
2.31 – Mugging
Criminal jobs may mug other players for a maximum of $25,000.
The victim must be given at least 30 seconds to comply with the demands.
The 30-second timer begins once the mugger has clearly communicated their demand.
You must wait at least 15 minutes before mugging the same player again.
You must wait at least 5 minutes before mugging a different player again.
The victim may run away during the mug.
KOS is permitted if the victim attempts to flee.
Victims may not fight back during a mug unless they already had a weapon drawn before the mug began.
If the victim does not have the requested amount of money, they may not be forced to provide money they do not possess.
2.32 – Kidnapping
The Kidnapper job may kidnap players and demand a ransom of up to:
- $50,000 for citizens
- $150,000 for government officials
A hostage may be held for a maximum of 15 minutes.
You must wait at least 30 minutes before kidnapping the same player again.
You must wait at least 15 minutes before kidnapping a different player again.
The hostage may attempt to escape.
KOS is permitted if the hostage attempts to flee.
The hostage may not fight back during a kidnapping unless they already had a weapon drawn before the kidnapping began.
Kidnappers may not intentionally prolong a kidnapping beyond the maximum time limit.
2.33 – PD & Bank Raids
NLR does not apply to defenders of an active Police Department or bank raid.
Defenders may return to the location after dying while the raid is still active.
This exception only applies to legitimate defenders of the property being raided.
2.34 – Mic Spam
Mic-spamming is only permitted for Hobos and DJs.
Audio must:
- Be played at a reasonable volume
- Be appropriate for the server
- Not contain 18+ or sexually explicit content
- Not intentionally disrupt other players
2.35 – Faction Territories
If a faction is capturing a territory controlled by your faction, KOS is permitted against members of the capturing faction.
The capturing faction may not attack the owners of the territory before they have opened fire.
Players not directly involved in the territory conflict may not be attacked without a separate legitimate roleplay reason.
2.36 – Defending Other Players
You may only defend another player if they are:
- Within your faction
- Basing with you
When basing with another player, both players must own the relevant door of the building.
Being friends with another player is not a valid reason to defend them.
For example, “he is my friend” is not a valid reason to attack another player and is considered RDM if none of the requirements above are met.
2.37 – Hitmen
Hitmen may only kill players who have an active hit placed on them through the intended hit system.
A hit must be legitimate and may not be used as an excuse to RDM unrelated players.
Hitmen may not:
- Place or accept fake hits for themselves
- Use OOC information to locate a target
- Reveal the identity of the person who placed a hit
- Attack players who are not the intended target
- Use a hit as justification for unrelated criminal activity
The target of a hit is not automatically KOS to other players.
2.38 – Illegal Entities & Raiding
Players may not use inaccessible locations, props, or building mechanics to hide illegal or money-making entities from legitimate roleplay.
Police must have a legitimate roleplay reason to search or raid a property.
Illegal entities do not provide automatic permission for police to raid a property without valid RP justification.
Players must keep money-making entities reasonably accessible within their property.
2.39 – The Purge
During the Purge, players are allowed to RDM and perform RP events without the usual requirement to advertise.
NLR does not apply during the Purge.
All other server rules remain in effect unless specifically overridden by the Purge rules.
